Purchasing Memory Boxes? – Know Your Options!

As the manufacturer of memory boxes, we hear firsthand from our customers what issues are important to them when choosing the right box for their facility. In fact, all our memory box designs and features are the result of addressing the needs encountered in the assisted living environment. Our quality, selection, and options of memory boxes are the easy answer to why buy from Custom Display Designs. But what to buy is not as easy.  With this in mind, this post will attempt to make that decision a little easier with a comparison of cost, features, and benefits. For each design, a comparison of cost, features, and benefits is offered.

Wall Mount Memory Boxes

Style #1

Memory Box Style 1 - Alzheimer Care - Dementia Memory Box - Assisted Living Memory Boxes

Sizing: Multiple standard sizes that can also be customized.  (Maximum depth of 4″ net wall protrusion meets ADA compliance.)  

Finishes: Available in both standard and custom stained or painted finishes.

Options:  This style has a variety of options to enhance its function and value:

  • 1S: Includes a signage area in the display area behind the locking hinged door. This signage area is not ADA compliant but allows space for you to attach a printout of the resident’s name, room number, photo, or any combination thereof.
  • 1ADA: Includes an ADA compliant signage area in the door.
  • 1LB: Includes 110V LED lighting and can be combined with other options.
  • 1DO:  A dual occupancy version offers two memorabilia display areas in one partitioned memory box that can include LED lighting and signage.

Summary: Style #1 is a versatile, attractive memory box display that offers the functionality required for the needs of those suffering from memory impairment. The available options enhance its value by providing additional wayfinding tools while minimizing hallway wall attachments. 

Style #2

Basic Memory Box - Assisted Living Facility Memory Boxes

Sizing:  Multiple standard sizes with some restrictions on sizing customization.  (Maximum depth of 4″ net wall protrusion meets ADA compliance.)

Finishes: Available in both standard and custom stained or painted finishes.

Options: This design is ideal for its basic functionality and for its desirable price point. Select a different style if you require more design options.

Summary:  A clean, innovative design that provides assistance for those suffering from Alzheimer’s, at a price point to meet most budgets.  The concealed pull pane port offers a level of security without the cost of a keyed lock.

Style #3

Sizing: Choose from three standard sizes with a maximum depth of 4” net wall protrusion to meet ADA compliance.

Finishes:  Available in painted finishes only.

Options: Like all other designs, wood or glass shelves can be added.  Signage and/or LED lighting are not offered in this design.

Summary:  Simple and clean by design, Style #3 offers the same level of security as Style #1 but at a reduced cost.  This is the budget-conscious choice for a locking memory box with the basic features that benefit the memory impaired.

Recessed Memory Boxes

Style #6 and Style #7

Recessed Memory Box - New Construction - Remodel Construction - Assisted Living Memory Boxes

Sizing:  One standard size that can be modified in both perimeter and depth dimensions for custom applications.

Finishes: Available in both standard and custom stained or painted finishes.

Options:  Both the style 6 & 7 are a versatile design that can accommodate a variety of options:

  • 6S &7S:  Includes a signage area in the display area behind the locking hinged door. This signage area is not ADA compliant but allows space for you to attach a printout of the resident’s name, room number, photo, or any combination thereof.
  • 6ADA & 7ADA:  Includes an ADA compliant signage area on the Style #6 door and in the fascia for Style #7.
  • 6LB & 7LB:  Includes 110V LED lighting and can be combined with other options. Assists in wayfinding for those with dementia by highlighting memorabilia, and provides ambient lighting.
  • 6DO & 7DO:  A dual occupancy version offers two memorabilia display areas in one partitioned memory box that can include LED lighting and signage.
Recess Mounted- Dementia Care - Assisted Living

Summary:  Both Style #6 and 7 can easily accommodate a variety of added features. A traditional framed door or a hinged tempered glass door is the primary difference that you should consider. They both offer a custom built-in look at a pre-fabricated, easy install price.

Clearly the variety of styles and options is extensive, and it’s still growing. Additional styles are in development that will include LCD screens that family members can remotely add photos to while staff monitors content.
